Waste sorting at ITMO

Primary resources, such as oil or wood, are not limitless, while certain types of waste take longer than an average human life to decompose. By recycling waste, we can partially solve this problem through lowering the amount of raw materials required for production and offering a new life to the collected waste.

What happens to recycled waste?

• 20 PET bottles -> 12 felt iPad cases
• 3 kg waste paper -> 1 ream of A4 paper
• 23,000 aluminum cans -> 1 light-sport aircraft

It is always a university’s administration that is responsible for its environmental footprint and introducing green practices into student life. As a member of the Association of Green Universities of Russia, ITMO strives to be at the top not only in research, but also in environmental rankings. Separate waste collection is essential for a socially responsible university and, moreover, it helps to save up on residual waste transportation and thus fund more student initiatives.

Waste sorting is a great initiative that doesn’t require a lot of effort. Moreover, it’s teamwork, where each member is equally important. This way. ITMO students and staff can bond over the shared problem of the university’s environmental footprint, and the common effort towards solving it serves as something to be proud of together.

At ITMO, you can recycle:

• PET, PETE: plastic bottles for beverages;
• PEHD, HDPE: plastic bottles from detergents, shampoos, or makeup;
• PP: food containers.

Before putting plastic into the recycling bin, make sure to clean it: empty it, wash it, and crush it.

At ITMO, you can’t recycle:

• PVC (polyvinyl chloride);
• Unmarked plastic Candy wrappers, toothbrushes, plastic straws;
• Tetra Pak and Pure Pak packaging.

At ITMO, you can recycle:

Glass containers: jars or bottles.

At ITMO, you can’t recycle:

• Ceramics and glassware: glasses, cups, plates;
• Pan lids Optics: eyeglasses, lenses;
• Light bulbs;
• Mirrors.

At ITMO, you can recycle:

• Cardboard (including corrugated cardboard);
• Books, magazines, newspapers, office paper, notebooks, flyers, paper packaging;
• Shredded paper;
• Sticker books;
• Drawings made with gouache, watercolors, glue, colored paper, markers, pencils, or crayons.

At ITMO, you can’t recycle:

• Juice or milk packaging;
• Paper tissues or towels;
• Laminated paper;
• Parchment or waxed paper, baking paper, tracing paper;
• Paper cups;
• Fax paper;
• Photo paper;
• Receipts.

HAZARDOUS WASTE: “Relater” bin, on Kronverksky Pr., 51 and Mira Ul., 7.

There you can recycle:

• mercury thermometers;
• batteries;
• compact energy-saving lamps.

BOOKS: special shelf in Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Aleksandrovskii Park, 7.

You are welcome to bring any books in good condition. The book exchange shelf is in the foyer.

TOOTHBRUSHES: “SPLAT/Perekrestok” bin on Kronverkskaya Ul., 5.

The container is located in the supermarket "Perekrestok". All brands of used plastic toothbrushes may be placed in the container. It does not accept electric toothbrushes, wooden toothbrushes, clothes or shoe brushes, dental floss, toothpicks, or food waste.

SAMSUNG gadgets: SAMSUNG eco-box, Marata Ul., 12.

A small cardboard container at the entrance. Accepts Samsung portable equipment for recycling: dead phones and smartphones, players, accessories for Samsung smartphones and mobile phones: chargers, headsets.

CLOTHES: the container for clothing from the charity shop "Spasibo", Zvenigorodskaya Ul., 6.

Clean clothes are accepted: adult and children's clothes, shoes, books, clothes with defects, not suitable for wearing – they will be recycled.

BATTERIES: DURACELL container, supermarket PRISMA, Vladimirsky Pr., 23.

BOOK: The store “Staraya kniga” Apraksin Pr., 11, “Knizhnaya lavka pisateley” Nevsky Pr., 66.

The container is installed in the Urbantiger store, Sennaya Shopping Mall, 2nd floor. In the container you can put clean clothes: adult and children's, shoes, books, clothes with defects, not suitable for wear – they will be recycled.

BOOK: RE:BOOKS, Grazhdansky Pr.,27.

The container is installed in the supermarket "Вкусвилл". You can put children's and adult's books in a readable condition in the container. Books should be tied up with twine, wrapped in paper or placed in a bag in small stacks. Not accepted: books in bad condition, dilapidated.

CLOTHES: the container for clothing from the charity shop "Spasibo", 8 Linia V.O., 25.

The container is located in the "Line" space. To get to the container from the main entrance, you have to walk to the exhibition space, go down the steps and turn the corner. You can put clean clothes – adult and children's, shoes, books, clothes with defects, not suitable for wear – they will be recycled.

The dormitory accepts lids, batteries and receipts.

Books in good condition are accepted. In the lobby of the library there is a freely accessible book exchange shelf for bookcrossing.

The container is accessed through an archway from Prof. Popov Ul. The container is located behind the glass door on the left after the archway. You can put clean clothes in the container: adult and children's clothes, shoes, books, clothes with defects, unsuitable for wear – they will be recycled.
