A foreign language is a part of the compulsory curriculum at ITMO University. To make the process of learning foreign languages engaging and efficient, we have developed a special 3-year program for our Bachelor’s students.

The main foreign language at ITMO is English. International students study Russian as a foreign language.

Before your classes start, you’ll need to take a test to identify your level of proficiency in English or Russian (for foreign students) according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Depending on the results of the test, you will be advised to the following tracks: A1, A2, B1.1, B1.2, B2, C1, С1+

Foreign students, whose test results demonstrate a high level of proficiency in Russian (B2 and above), can choose English as a foreign language.

Terms: 1-6

Credits: 18 (3 CE for each term)

Apart from the main foreign language, students can also opt to study other languages as electives.

Moreover, to have additional language practice students of all levels and academic degrees can attend Speaking clubs. There are speaking clubs in Russian, English, German, French, Spanish and Chinese.

For students, willing to go abroad for an exchange semester, there is also a possibility to pass an English proficiency test and get a certificate that will be a relevant proof oа student’s English level.

How to sign up for the course

You need to choose the group of appropriate language and level at my.itmo.ru with authorization by the students' ISU account.The level is determined by entrance testing (first year) or by the results of the previous year of study.

Language courses at ITMO are implemented by the Foreign Language Training Center.
