Academic leave

Students are provided academic leave based on a personal request and supporting documents.

The application

  • Depending on the type of leave, you’ll need to fill in the appropriate request form by going to My ISU: Student Services Office; 
  • There, you also have to attach scanned copies of supporting documents [1];
  • Submit your request to the Student Services Office;
  • After your request has been processed, the date and time will be set for your visit to the Office to file your application; 

Within 10 days after your application has been filed in Student Services Office, an order providing your academic leave will be issued. You will need to move out of your dorm room within 3 days after the order is published. Students on fee-based positions do not pay for their education during academic leave and all payments made in advance are returned to them. 


[1] Supporting documents: 

  • Academic leave for medical reasons: copy of the sick leave certificate from the medical institution, a certificate with a recommendation to grant academic leave from the medical institution, other medical documents (if available) from the medical institution;
  • Academic leave due to family commitments or other circumstances: copies of supporting documents confirming the necessity of academic leave (if applicable);
  • Academic leave for reasons of pregnancy and childbirth: copy of medical certificate
  • Parental leave: copy of birth certificate. 

Extension of academic leave (optional)

Academic leave can be extended at the student’s request if supported by the necessary documents1. All types of leave apart from parental leave cannot last over two years including extensions. A request to extend your academic leave needs to be filed with the Student Services Office before your leave has ended. If the request hasn’t been filed, an order of expulsion due to failure to return to your studies after academic leave will be issued after the two-week period is over. 

  • Depending on the type of leave, you’ll need to fill in the request form by going to My ISU: Student Services Office; 
  • Prepare your supporting documents;
  • Submit your request to the Student Services Office;
  • After your request has been processed, the date and time will be set for your visit to the Office to file your application; 

Within 10 days after your application has been filed, an order providing the extension of your academic leave will be issued.

Returning to your studies

Your return is confirmed with a personal request to return to your studies and supporting documents (if applicable). The request is filed with the Student Services Office before two weeks the leave has ended or at any time before it ends if you want to return earlier. If the request hasn’t been filed, an order of expulsion due to failure to return to your studies after academic leave will be issued after the two-week period is over. 

  • Depending on the type of leave, you’ll need to fill in the request form by going to My ISU: Student Services Office; 
  • Prepare your supporting documents1 proving that your return is approved;
  • Submit your request to the Student Services Office;
  • After your request has been processed, the date and time will be set for your visit to the Office to file your application; 

Within 10 days after your application has been filed, an order will be issued approving your return to studies and renewal of your state scholarship payments. You will return to your studies on the same conditions as before your leave.

  • Maternity leave: completed sick leave.
