Analyzing the News: Ideology, Power, Manipulation

Today, we find ourselves overwhelmed by the flow of information, controversial messages, and hoaxes. In many aspects, news shapes the way people view social reality, serves as primary source of knowledge about other parts of the world, promotes certain values and ideologies. Most of the world’s news is carried in English, which is the leading media language in international communication. This course is for those who would like to develop a more critical and conscious view of media texts. Students are going to learn about how media texts work, how to identify ideological bias and reveal hidden meanings. Not only will the course provide a better understanding of how different events are perceived and framed in the English-language culture, but it will also allow to boost one’s English skills, especially analytical reading.
